Hello and welcome! This item for auction is a stunning antique calling card case. The case is created from sandalwood and has two parts - the main body in which the cards are held and the lid. It is intricately hand carved on both sides with scenes depicting Asian men (possibly holy men) in among bamboo trees and pagodas. These scenes include a man holding a fan, another man holding some sort of text, while yet another seems to be teaching or lecturing to two other men. It is absolutely charming with fascinating detail. The edge is also hand carved all the way around with a floral pattern. Calling cards were used beginning during the Victorian era but the fashion for them died out in the 1920's. This little item would have been used to hold them during the latter part of the nineteenth century - probably around 1880, but it would be just as useful as an attractive holder for business cards today. This is a wonderful chance to own a lovely piece of social history. The case measures approximately 3 1/4" long at its longest point and is 1 3/4" across at its widest. It is about 1/2" deep. It is in wonderful condition with no damage of any kind. The lid fits nice and snugly on. T are some spots of discoloration that are to be expected with its age.
