circa 1890s-1920s INCREDIBLE HAND-CARVED WALNUT PANEL APPROX. MEASUREMENTS 16 1/2"H by 20"W by 3 1/4"D weight 7lbs 4.6oz mounted on board This is one of the most spectacular panel carvings I have seen in a long time. Walnut. All hand carved within a frame and then later, mounted to a board around the 1920s perhaps for greater stability. Came from an exceptional estate auction held in the Midwest. I do not know if this was a door panel or part of a larger architectural piece. Figural in relief form depicts the head and wings of a cherub surrounded with scrolled leaves, florals, and other embellishments. Carving is extremely well-crafted and detailed. Face of the cherub is truly stunning. Exceptionally well-carved. Carefully rendered. Beautifully sculpted and carved. Perhaps this panel was carved by a furniture or cabinet maker. I took as many pictures as I was able to show the fine craftsmanship of this piece. The flowers and leaves extend onto the beveled wood frame. T are stems and more leaves and some flowers and either acorns or buds on the sides. T is a great deal of activity going on in this panel. It appear to be fully intact as one whole panel piece. T are no loose or broken, or missing pieces of wood. T is some wear to the face of the angel. The original hook at the top is very secure to the piece. It does not turn or rotate. Just think this is an exquisite art carving. Old, early, and certainly well-crafted. T is a haunting quality about this piece. If you are looking for an architectural panel, this would be a remarkable and exemplary piece to display. Just has soul. If you have any questions or wish additional pictures, I am happy to assist.
