This auction is for a very unusual vintage wood carving , recently purchased at an estate sale. It is approximately 25" long by 6 1/2" high by 1 1/2" thick, and I am not sure what kind of wood it is - it may be walnut. It is hand carved and features what appears to be Neptune's Horse pulling a sea shell. Inside the sea shell is a woman, and I think she is Venus Rising . Behind and holding onto the sea shell is a nude woman, who appears to be rising from the waves, and she may represent Venus Rising also. Behind the nude woman is what appears to be a castle wall. It has what appears to be original paint in primarily dark blue, red, pink and black, and t are painted "stripes" on the back in these colors. The carving is quite amazing, especially since the wood is so thick, and a lot of work was put into it. I did take this to an appraiser, who dated it late 1800's or early 1900's, and said it is definitely European, possibly Italian. He had no idea what it could be intended for - he had never seen anything quite like it - but that it may be part of a longer carved scene. T is a small piece of wood missing near the bottom of the horse, and the paint is worn, but this great old carving is in otherwise very good condition.
