When I purchased this unique box years ago at auction I felt it was probably a spice box. Then recently on eBay I saw a box, almost identical in shape, construction and size which was listed as Excellent Ex-Museum C1780 American Treen Spice Box . To see this listing go to Advanced Search, type in the title in the Keyword box and click the Completed Listings Only box. The listed box was an ex-museum item and the listing told about a similar box being pictured in Genevieve Cummins definitive book on boxes, Antique Boxes In And Out 2006. Other references sited were Early American Antique Country Furnishings by George C. Neumann, Primitives And Folk Art by Catherine Thuro, and Early American Wooden Ware by Mary Earle Gould. I personally have not seen these books. The box I am listing is 10 3/4" long X 3 3/4" wide X 3 1/4" deep and is completely hand made. The lid swivels open to reveal two compartments for storage of spices. The lid has a variety of wonderful hand carved designs. The right side of the box is decorated with a carved classic 8 pointed star and an area with carved grooves for rubbing or grating. The left side of the box has two carved grating areas. The box is very thick and heavy and has a wonderful patina. The ends and the back of the box are plain with no carved designs. The box is in very good condition but does show read more
