Dates to the 1880s-90s.Long ago it was turned into a frame with the portraits of two haunting brotherssandwiched behind a piece of reverse painted glass.One son looks angelic ~ the other looks slightly evil. But perhaps it's the other way around! Looks can be deceiving. Perhaps the sweet-faced boy was evil and caused the other brother a life of grief...or certainly jealousy.Everyone who has looked at this plate at first glance sees a skull in the lower corner of the brother's portrait on the left. It's an optical illusion and is actually part of a scroll design.The milk glass plate itself is haunting. The cherub faces have the 1800s look one finds on gravestones of that period. It appears the cherub's hair were once tinted gold. The rest of the crevices are still encrusted with a century or more of dirt which gives highlight to all the pictorial qualities of the plate.
