This is an exquisite Antique Oyster Plate. Manufactured by Haviland & Co. Limoges approx. 125 years ago. It has the makers marks intact on the backside of this pristine plate. As you can see the stamp says HAVILAND & CO and LIMOGES written with the teal color paint. The mark is set inside a double circle which is the shape of a lifesaver candy. Directly beneath t is another makers mark that says H & C co on top of the line, and L underneath in more of a green color. As you may know this stamp dates this plate to have been made between 1876 and before 1880, when this stamp was no longer used. This is a 9 inch plate with 6 oyster wells, and a center sauce well. It is beautifully decorated on a stark white porcelain background. It is what is called one of the Sea Life patterns. I had thought it was hand painted, but I saw another auction a while back which had the same back stamp, but not the same design stating it was decal. It may be decal with hand painted accents. But again I always thought it was OOAK hand painted. I have never seen anything even similar to this design, other than the little sea life creatures part of the design. It does have tiny touches of pearlized accents which you can feel raised on the plate, as well as 14kt. or 18kt. gold trim around the edge of the plate. The scene is of a yellow clam shell which is partially open, pink sea plants sprouting around, then brown sea plants. T is also a small fish, star fish, and a shell. It is truly gorgeous !!! The plate is in pristine condition. The paint is bright as new. Upon examination before listing I noticed a small pin prick indentation in one spot off to the side close to the edge of the plate. This was obviously done in the manufacturing process as the glaze is intact over it. I never noticed it before, probably due to the fact that it is right next to the ornate scalloping design in the plate, and it is not noticable under normal display. It has a beautiful edging of 14kt. or 18kt. gold trim. T are a few skips in the gold trim, which you could easily have touched up if you feel the need. It is not at all aparent unless closely inspecting. This is my last oyster plate for auction, as it is my favorite. It has been kept safely packaged for all this time. I inherited this plate and other treasures from my aunts estate more than 20 years ago. My aunt was a very elegant woman who was very proper, as well as the perfect hostess. She and my uncle collected beautiful antiques in the USA, as well as from around the world. This particular plate along with 23 others were purchased by my uncle at a very reputable antique shop in Philadelphia. My lifestyle of raising children, and grandchildren, did not make it practical to display some of the beautiful museum quality treasures that were left to me, for fear of them being damaged. Now that I am older, and moving to a smaller place, I need to let go of many of the things I've held on to but never use, nor have a place for. I have done my best to describe this auction to the best of my ability with the limited knowledge I have, as I am not an expert in the field. I can however unequivably confirm this to be truly authentic, and that it has been passed down through my family.
