HEUSSER ASSAY GOLD BALANCE SCALE 1920 / EXTRAS FREE SHIPPING TO LOWER 48 STATES !!! Offered is a rare Wilfred Heusser Assay Button Balance from around 1920. I believe it is a Model 3000, but I'm not absolutely positive. Heusser was considered by many to have produced the highest quality " button " balances availible for the booming gold and silver assay industry. Heusser was born in France(1875), and immigrated to the US in 1904. By 1906 Heusser was learning the balance making business in California from a well known scale maker named George Keller. In 1910 he started his own company, the " The Heusser Instrument Manufacturing Company ". Catering to the many assayers of that time, his goal was to make an all metal balance that was of the highest quality. Heusser strived to make a low maintenance, rust proof balance that was both unbreakable and non-magnetic. He settled on a custom metal alloy, cobalt and chromium. This metal combination was ideal for balances exposed to the rigors of the assay laboratory environment. He continued making improvements on his balances for the next twenty years. Heusser concentrated on making the inverted style balance, that is, the "needle " pointed upward from the beam, rather than downward. His many designs earned him numerious patents and awards. Heusser used select Cornelian Agate ( which is especially durable) for his balance bearing points and knife edges. The beams were all constructed from solid rolled brass that is heavily gold-plated. The mathematical basis for his truss style beam was designed for strength and rigidity. The balance is equipped with exterior controls for the dual rider rods, which allow the operator to place the rider weights along both sides of the graduated beam index. The photos show the dual bubble level indicators, located in front of the column base. Overall case size is 20"W X 17"H X 9"D. The case was deliberately made heavy, primarily for stability. The pictures were taken with the front sash removed to improve the quality of the photos. The base is thick and sturdy, with two drawers. On the bottom of each corner are adjustable leveling screw feet. The beam is locked down or lifted with the large knob located front and center, this also operates the stability risers for the pans. Sensitivity is 1/200th of a milligram, a human hair will deflect the indicator needle. This is a working balance in excellect condition. The front sash access window is counter-weighted and removable. All parts and glass are original. Nothing is bent, broken, or missing. This balance has been relisted. It is now offered at a lower starting price and includes some authentic assay tools. One of these items is an Ainsworth No.150 Assay Weight Set in "like new" condition. Please Google Wm. Ainsworth history and Scroll down through to the illustrated balance scales. At the bottom of the 1920 Calkins catalog you will see the No.150 Assay Weight Set. Priced at $20.00 in 1920, this is equal to about $150.00 in today's dollars. The unique round Ainsworth box is described as being fashioned from rare and expensive ebony. The 1gm, 500mg, 200mg, (2)100mg, and 50mg weights are heavily gold-plated. Next are 20mg, (2)10mg, 5mg, (2)2mg, and (2)1mg. Also you will find two beam rider weights, which are usually pure platinum wire. Accuracy for the set is +/- .01mg or 1/100th of 1mg. The screw fastener on the lid is also gold-plated. Also included is a solid brass antique U.S. Standard Tyler 3" sieve, with a mesh of 100 to the sq. inch, which is .0058 of an inch opening in the mesh, or 149 microns. More goodies include a 4" Coors ceramic mortar and pestle, a set of stainless steel tweezers, a horsehair brush, a German made magnifier/tweezer combo w/ leather case, a metal tin for storing the tiny scale pan cups, and finally a dozen actual pure SILVER "buttons". These "buttons" are the final product of the assay process, weighed with this type of balance. ...
