is an amazing antique wicker baby carriage / pram that was made by the Heywood Brothers Wakefield Company (which later became the still popular HEYWOOD WAKEFIELD company). It has the original Heywood Brothers Wakefield Company, Mass. label on the bottom of carriage (Gardner Massachusetts, I believe - it's sort of hard to make out). Height is 36" tall, length is 54" from front of carriage down to handle, and the body of the carriage is 22" wide. The wheels measure 16" in diameter. This carriage is from the late 1800s. Wicker perambulators, or baby carriages, were being manufactured in America by the 1860s, and were very popular by the 1880s. Nineteenth-century carriages were quite ornate. In the 1890s, some carriages were made with a footrest and a reclining back (like this one). A child could lie down and sleep in the carriage, so it was called a "go- cart sleeper." Go-cart sleepers came in many shapes and were made by many companies, including Gendron Wheel Co., Heywood Brothers, Wakefield Rattan Co. and F.A. Whitney Carriage Co. By 1910, simplicity was preferred, and the scrolled and curved wicker buggies were out of style. This carriage is in good overall condition for it's age. It is made of woven wicker, wood and metal, and even comes with the original canopy top. The wicker areas are in pretty good shape - t are worn areas at the front, curved edges, and one hole worn thorough the foot rest. T is also a split to the wood of the right top bar, near the beginning of the curve. The wicker on the seat is a tighter weave, and is in good shape. The scalloped edges are all in good shape too. The metal parts are all sound - just some light green oxidation that will likely come off. T is some wear to the wheels, but they are still solid and rotate easily. The wheels come off too, and snap back into place easily. The canopy top is removable too, and screws back into place on the sides. All of the hardware seems to be present. T is a lever in the back to adjust the tilt of the seat (it lowers all the way back), and also a lever that seems to work as a break by adding pressure to the wheels. All of this seems to be in working order. The leather seat belt is mostly missing - just the buckles and small pieces are left. The carriage was stored for many years in an attic, and could use a good cleaning as a result. I didn't want to mess with it too much, to preserve it's original state as much as possible. It is being sold in "AS IS" condition. It's a pretty little thing. I have included many views, but feel free to e-mail me if you would like extra pictures, or more detailed information (please include your e-mail address, as I cannot attach pictures through ebay messages). SHIPPING NOTE: this is a large, rather heavy and delicate item. I usually pack and ship things myself, but in this case I will be taking it to a professional shipper, and the winning bidder is responsible for the cost of this.
