Antique Hungarian Silver Denar coin - Wladislaw Hungary A solid silver Hungarian denar of King Wladislaw (also known as Vladislas) the second, dating to 1490-1516.The obverse depicts the Virgin Mary, holding the infant Jesus on her knee. The legend reads "VNGARIE PATRONA" - "The Patron of Hungary". "K H" on the obverse shows the mint-mark as Kremnitz (in modern-day Slovakia). The reverse shows a coat of arms and the legend "WLADISLAI R VNGARI 1502". These Virgin and Christ coins were minted in the Hungarian Kingdom from the middle of the 15th to the early 17th Century. They date to a time when the Hungarian Empire, encompassing land from Croatia to Transylvania, was a frontier Christian state at war with the feared Ottoman Turks. This fascinating period saw the uprising of the infamous 'Vlad the Impaler', inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, who in the winter of 1461 crossed the Danube and brutally slaughtered nearly 25,000 Ottomans. The Virgin and Christ depiction is believed to represent Christian defiance in the face of the Muslim invaders, who would eventually capture Hungary in 1526. These coins are some of the earliest coins in the world to feature the date, a feature which is commonplace today. Weight: 0.50 g. Diameter: 5/8 inch.
