Rare late 19th century Qing Dynasty Imperial Robe ~ Chinese Manchu style summer silk gauze robe heavily decorated in couched metallic gold and multi-colored silk threads with heavily embroidered patterns and figures featuring many 5-clawed dragons depicted in full-face and profile poses against a dark Indigo blue silk. (blue ground is for a 3rd rank Prince and dragons were reserved for Imperial use ) All the many colors in this exquisite robe (other than the dark blue background color) are finely hand-embroidered. A multitude of Dragons are chasing flaming pearls (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) they are surrounded by many clouds, waves and various auspicious symbols, including the Eight Buddhist symbols of Good Fortune . The dragon's eyes are accented in black and white. An embroidered panel surrounding the waistband and on the lower skirting is filled with additional dragons running across the top of waves. The bottom of the robe is decorated in the traditional pattern of waves, stylized mountains, smoke in clouds, peonies, bats, and diagonal bands of upright water (Li Shui) permeated throughout with auspicious symbols including serpents and fish. The traditional sleeve extension and horsehoof cuff are woven in the same indigo colored ground and are lined with the original light blue silken brocade. The bulk of the robe remains unlined and features the standard side-fastening overlapping frog closure with three heavy, carved and gilded bronze buttons. It is a very large, long robe in fair condition and measures approximately 85" from sleeve tip to sleeve tip and 54 1/2" in length.
