Buyer to receive: Nice antique inlaid wood lap desk. Top features inlaid design with light and dark wood, I believe the box is cherry or rosewood possibly or some combination of nicer woods. The front has a fluer de lis design inlaid around the keyhole. All corners on the bottom are protected with brass, as well as all hinges. The top opens to reveal the first level featuring 2 inkwells with amethyst glass lids, and the ink wells are beveled all around, The inkwell on the right has a chip off a corner. The left one seems about as close to perfect as you can imagine for the age of this piece. T are a couple compartments between the 2 inkwells. You flip the next level down to reveal the red velvet covered writing surface with 2 tones of wood surrounding the velvet area. The front part reveals a compartment for pencils etc pegged in dove tailed at the corners. The back part flips up to reveal at first glance another empty space, but upon closer inspection you see that the back wall flips out to reveal a secret compartment to hold all your most prized possessions, or atleast some important papers. I notice no major damage. I estimate this piece to be atleast mid 1800's possibly dating back to mid to late 1700's. It has held up very nice for age, and has been well taken care of to date. I notice no markings on any part or piece within. read more
