Antique Inlaid Shell Knotting / Tatting Shuttle English * Circa 1790 This wonderful and rare old knotting shuttle was used for making a knotted trim popular with French and English ladies between 1750 and 1800. It's carved from natural blond shell and held together with rivets. Rose gold flowers cover the rivets on both sides. The post is matching shell. The shell is inlaid all over with dots of the more usual dark shell. Aside from a couple of small spots of insect nibbling, it's in excellent condition with no chips or cracks and measures 4 5/8" long by 1 3/8" wide. The ends are intact and it glows with patina. It's lovely and smooth and feels quite comfortable in the hand. Nerylla Taunton shows an 18th century portrait of a lady knotting on page 65 of her book Antique Needlework Tools .
