MLN 711 / Antique Cypress/Pine Italian Nightstand ~ A few years ago, we were thrilled to attend an auction of treasures from an Italian inn which had been closed up for 50 years. It was a small place, just outside of Rome, and when the proprietors died in the '60s, the surviving family simply closed it down and left everything inside as it was when the place was a thriving business. We acquired a number of these grand cypress/pine nightstands, each with a different, beautiful marble top. We knew we had another nightstand somew in our warehouse, because we had a piece of marble marked "Italian inn." But darned if we could find it ~ until just this week. Moving armoires and sideboards out of the darkest, most crowded corner of our east warehouse, we found this stunning thing all alone in the dark. It was thrilled, as we were, to bring it into the light, to polish its glorious old wood, to restore it to its original beauty through the simple act of cleaning. Isn't it lovely? It has exceptional grain, a wide open wood which we were told was cypress, but which might be pine. The rustic charm is something we can easily see in the hills of Italy, and the marble top gives crowns it with perfection. Striking. And in wonderful shape.
