ANTIQUE Italian GRAND TOUR BRONZE Temple of Vesta c1870

This fine italian grand tour bronze was discovered this week, whilst renovating a country house in North Essex ( the other items are listed seperately including a silver mounted crocodile cigar case hallmarked 1878 and a pair of silhouettes one featuring the young gentleman pictured in my last photo, who I am told was the owner of all. ) This patinated bronze dates from around 1870, when he completed his grand tour of europe and is quite ingenious in that the building is The Temple of Vesta and this was designed to be a table vesta holder ! The Temple of Vesta contained the sacred flame and The Palladium, an effigy of Athene, believed to have been brought by Aenas to Troy. This ancient temple was builtin imitation of a primitive round hut, it's hearth fire symbolizing the perpetuity of The Roman State. The duty of the six handmaidens of the goddess Vesta was never to allow the flame to be extinguished. So a very appropriate useage ! This measures 6" in diameter and 4" tall, condition is basically good with the marble base having suffered one chip ( clearly photographed ) but the brown veining in the marble does make it less noticeable. The bronze itself has achieved a rich patination over the years and has fortunately remained uncleaned. The central "hut" section can be raised and I suspect that one corinthian column may have been removed to facilitate the removal of vesta debris from the central base. Take a close look at my photos and I hope you will agree that this does not detract from this items beauty, in fact it may enhance it ! Quite a scarce item I would imagine, it's only downside being it's weight approx. 3lb, which is reflected in the shipping cost. I have quoted a Royal Mail insured shipping cost but should I be able to ship through a courier at a cheaper cost, I will refund the difference. Will you ever find another of these ?
