You are invited to bid on a antique showpiece mandolin made by Alfonso Moretti in Italy. It was purchased from an antique dealer in Brighton, England, in October 1982 by its current owner. The inside sticker reads "Alfonso Moretti, Napoli, Fabricante di Mandolini, Imported by Ball Beavon & Co. London." T is a beautiful mother of pearl inlay on the unfinished spruce top, and we suspect that the tuning machines are topped with ivory, by their look and feel. We aren't sure of the wood(s) used in the sides/back/neck/headstock--our guess is mahogany. This instrument is NOT playable--the neck is warped, but not unsightly; t is a crack in the bottom round that is about 3 inches in length; and, it's missing a metal tail piece. This collector's item has been hanging on a wall for the past 25 years, and the current owner--a musician and collector of old instruments--is now making room for newer acquisitions. It comes with its original leather case, which is extremely fragile and very worn, and the lid no longer attaches to the body of the box. The old leather handle, long since fallen off, is saved in the case compartment. We don't know how old this instrument and case is...
