Antique Japanese ivory hand carved filigree "box". This is an amazing piece when you look closely to all the detail that has gone into it. The "box" is actually a base for another ivory carving that is long gone, they made these in Japan and this is a late 19th century version, that was highly prized in the Victorian era. Other than the top missing, the rest of the box, has some wear and very minor flaws, but overall very nice condition, the detail of the filigree and the floral pattern, roses vines, daisies, it is amazing The neat little way the artist concealed the fact that this base was a box, it is 2 threads that should be carefully opened and closed, and when opened it reveals the artists initials. From what I understand, that little compartment was used to hold another carving possibly a Buddha, or some small elaborate carving. No reserve. Height 2 3/4" base diameter 2 1/4".
