This offering is for a lovely hand-carved solid ivory Portuguese or Spanish Madonna, This figure stands over 10 inches tall and is carved of elephant ivory. Per the previous owners, its origin was from the Goa Area (Portuguese Colony), but it is unknown if the ivory was carved in the Indo-Portuguese holding or simply brought raw and carved in Europe or elsew It has been hard to date and I done research on church antiques, old ivory and have used information from the previous seller and several collectors who have also weighed in with their evaluations and viewpoints, with estimates ranging from the 18th to the 19th Century. It is over 10 inches tall, on a 2.5 inch base and is three inches wide at its widest. A visually striking example of piety, this lovely Madonna is in solid ivory weighing 1.3 lbs or 588 grams. This is a fine original antique ivory religious exhibiting a simple and placid figure, one of great patience and humility. The are becoming quite rare and this simple carving and quite befitting its Portuguese or Spanish lineage. I understand it has been polished several years ago (too bad). While t is yellowing and some minor age cracking, nothing is structurally a problem. Please enjoy it and email me with any questions.
