Description Carved wooden statue of the Shaka Nyorai Buddha (the Historical Buddha) depicted in a seated meditation posture. The statue's hands are arranged in the zenjou -in (aka hokkaijou-in ) mudra which is commonly associated with the meditating Buddha. Other characteristics which help us identify this statue are the elongated ears (all hearing) as well as the bump on the top of the head which indicates great knowledge. The Historical Buddha is thought to have lived during the sixth century B.C. somew in northern India or present-day Nepal. About the Listed Item The Shaka statue offered was acquired in Shizuoka, Japan and was probably once the centerpiece of a family home altar or butsudan as they are called in Japanese. Such altars are common in most traditional Japanese homes (see the last photo below which shows our daughter with her grandparents sitting in front of our family butsudan ). Japanese commonly place such statues of the Buddha within the innermost sanctuary of the family home altar, which is also used to hold tablets inscribed with the secular names of ancestors. This statue is made of White Fir assembled in the yosegi style of fabrication in which multiple pieces of high quality wood are laminated together and carved before being covered with some layers of gilded lacquer. The statue dates from the early to mid Japanese Showa period (1926-1989) and is in very poor condition with cracks and chips as well as many marks and scratches. Much of the statue's paint has fallen off and much remains loose so we recommend careful handling to prevent further damage. A section of wood from the backside of the base of the display pedestal is missing though this does not seem to affect the presentation. The statue is ready to once again receive offerings and care as the centerpiece of a home altar or as an admired and appreciated addition to someone's collection of Buddhist artifacts.
