ITEM: All my auctions start at one penny. This is a very beautiful antique Japanese hanakago. The workmanship is superb and the condition is excellent. This has no damage and the only thing I recommend is a cleaning. Simple. I think this is an early Meiji era basket. T is no signiture, which was common on antique Japanese objects, since it was forbidden by law to sign a piece if your status was not officially of an artist. After the Meiji era this rule was relaxed and anyone with a pinchant to make art could sign their name with no trouble. This basket was made using different weaving techniques as well as different size bamboo strips. The color is wonderful and the winner will find it a pleasing addition to their home. It measures approximately 15 inches from base to top of handle. The weight is nearly 1 kilo. This comes from my personal collection which I am now selling. This same style basket on any of the Japanese antique websites from the USA would surely start at around $1500.00 and possible go as high as the $3500.00 range. I'm starting this at a penny.
