Antique Japanese Iron Choshi Sake Kettle This sake kettle was purchased in Kyoto , Japan in July 1971 and came from my father's estate. He was a world traveler and avid collector of Chinese and Asian art. An old iron sake kettle ( chosi ) with a wonderful, raised hob nail pattern that covers the body. Age is estimated to be Meiji period, 1868-1912. Choshi wine or sake kettles were traditionally used for ceremonial purposes at temples and shrines. The elegant elongated spout and base are smooth to the touch. Three small rounded feet support the kettle. A flat circular piece with a slightly knobby texture is offset from the center of the bottom; it does not appear to be a patch based on the condition of the interior. Atop the kettle is a brass lid with a raised finial adorned with an amber-colored glass bead. At the base of the finial is a five-petal, cherry blossom enhancement. The curved handle is brass as well and has its original fittings to keep it in place. Some discoloration to the brass has occurred over time. The exterior is in excellent condition. A bit of old rust is visible on the inside. If you have any questions about this kettle, please email me prior to bidding. Serious bidders only. Thank you. The kettle measures 7-1/2 inches in height and is 10 inches wide including the spout. The opening measures 3-7/8 inches read more
