ANTIQUE JAPANESE MIXED METAL BRONZE VASE. This vase measures 4 3/4" tall. It is 1 3/8" in diameter at the base. The top is 1 5/8" in diameter. This bronze vase is a superb example of a truly extraordinary Japanese art form--mixed metals! The vase was made of bronze. The bronze was then decoratively engraved. Circling the neck is a single flower blossom with ribbon-like vines extending on either side. On the main side and on the back side are engraved plants--tall thin stems with leaves branching off. Engraved around the base are short tufts of grass and a wavy suggestion of earth. By itself the beauty of the vase and the quality of the engraving would be sufficient to qaulify the vase as a beautiful piece. However, the additional touch which truly puts this piece in a category of excellence all its own is the addition of metal deorative pieces applied to the engraving. The engraved stems have raised gold metal flower buds and blossoms attached. Interspersed between the engraved leaves are raised gold metal leaves. And, the focal point of the whole piece is a delightful bird, wings flapping, in the center of the tallest plant. The bird's feet are curved around the branch. You cannot tell whether the bird is landing or taking off, but the action is stopped and caught every bit as perfectly as though a camera had just been clicked! read more
