Original Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Matching Mounts
This awesome Wakizashi is brand new on the collectors market. It was found in a loft and is of good quality. It dates to approximately 1500-1700. As you can see from the pictures, the entire sword is black with grime and age. All of this should clean off easily to reveal the beauty beneath.
The Mounts are complete and very good. The Tsuba (hand guard) is signed and depicts a very nice scene of a man walking under trees. The Fuchi and Kashira match showing very nice stylised floral designs in gold. The Tsuka (handle) is traditionally wrapped over ray skin, interestingly using a leather cord rather than cotton. The menuki are fantastic, big and flowing with what would appear to be a family crest. The saya (scabbard) has a metal end cap which looks to be the same design as the fuchi and kashira. T he lacquer could use a little attention but is in good usable condition. There is a slot for a small knife in the scabbard but it is of course missing. All in all very nice mounts.
The blade is whip-like in its design and looks very nice. It shows good lines and is complete and undamaged. I cannot make out and Hamon details as it is coated in soot and dirt from its many years of hibernation. You can clearly see the tip is complete and the tang is of great age. A polisher could work this sword back to its original glory in no time.
It really would make a superb quality Wakizashi if you were willing to take a little time to clean it up. The mounts should clean with just household polish, the blade may need some finger stoning. This would be a lovely piece for any collection and after a little TLC could turn out to be the centre piece.
