Original Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed Tamba No Kami yoshimichi This is a great find. It is a quality example of the sword smiths art. A Japanese Wakizashi signed by a great sword smith 'Tamba No Kami Yoshimichi'. Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi worked right at the beginning of the Shinto period. He is the son of Kanemichi of Mino province, and moved to Kyoto with his father where he worked until 1635. His title of Tanba no Kami dates to 1595, which is one year before the "official" start of the Shinto period. This border between the periods is in practice more grey than the abrupt termination that is handy to use for classification purposes, so though he was working in the koto period he is considered to be a shinto smith by style and tradition. He made swords of great sharpness, receiving the ranking of Ryo-wazamono. Fujishiro rates him as Jo-saku, for a high degree of quality . Interestingly this blade is not only signed 'Tamba No Kami Yoshimichi' but is also has a signature in the top of the tang. This style of sword signing is rare and I have only had a few dual signed blades in my entire life. I am not sure if it is an early S hinsa mark, a blade test mark or a Yoshimichi school mark. More research certainly needs to be carried out on this blade. It is out of polish although you can clearly see the very nice and active hamon, which is a slightly flowing Suguha in style with a slight Notare. The grain would appear to be a Matsukawa-Hada but I cannot see it clearly. This blade needs a polish to bring it back to a show standard. The collar (Habaki) is a nice heavy rain design. This sword would benefit from a clean up and a light polish. This would be a lovely piece to study and for any collection. Please study the pictures carefully as I do not accept returns.
