Antique JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS BREAD KNIFE England
This is an antique "BREAD" knife made by JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS, CUTLERS TO HIS MAJESTY...in nice condition for being over 100 years old.
The blade is 7" long...the overall length, with handle, is 12 1/2". I believe the blade to be carbon steel.
The blade is marked "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS, CUTLERS TO HIS MAJESTY" with the company's famous STAR & MALTESE CROSS mark and E crown R, and "ENGLAND" on the back side. The blade also has an etched design which I can't quite make out what it is...it may be just a fancy design.
"Joseph Rodgers & Sons" was one of the largest cutlery manufacturers in Sheffield, England in the late 1800s.
A reference I found of a 1907 catalog described this knife in this way: " catlalog # 1589, 7" blade, Joseph Rodgers & Sons, boxwood handle carved with the word "BREAD", etched blade".
The wood handle does have some cracks...nothing that hurts the looks of this fine piece.
