Antique Knife Box Stand Cabinet 1800s Fruitwood Inlaid Mahogany Knife boxes were used daily to protect silver cutlery at a time when silver was considered very precious. Most were fitted with a lock and key (note the lock and key are missing) to discourage theft. The stunning box has a curved front and features a sloping hinged lid with detailed inlaid fruitwood and stringing on its edges. This knife box is unusual because it sits upon a gracefully curved tripod of wooden legs. There is a small shelf under the main cabinet. The top opens to reveal a fitted interior with 3 slots. The dividers were added later to replace the original interior knife slots which are now gone. The interior lid is inlaid with a central multi- paneled disk surrounded by herringbone stringing. DIMENSIONS: Box : 13" highest 9" widest 9" deepest Total Height: 28" maximum CONDITION: The original lock and key are missing as is the original slotted interior. There are splits in the wood and there is a piece missing from the front leg of the chest. The overall condition is very good considering this items age. Structurally, it is very sound. I have photographed the issues please reference enlarged photos for more detail. The item pictured is the item you will receive.
