The size is 40” x 63” This is a classic and characteristic “textbook example” of a Ladik Prayer rug; and dates from around 1800. Classically proportioned, with truly excellent colors—the ivory spandrels are particularly beautiful….but it has some problems: It can be regarded as a “specimen” rug, however most of the significant damage is of a traumatic rather than a “worn out”nature. If these localized “traumatic” damages are repaired by an experienced repairperson, the remainder of the rug has good pile and would be of more than acceptable condition for this age of rug. Now, for the damage: (refer to the annotated photograph--note: there is no “touch up” on this rug, and the rug is very clean) 1.) there is a peculiar narrow and long traumatic damage running along the left side of the mihrab and spandrel that requires careful reweaving to bring the rug back to condition. This is however in many respects a fairly straightforward reweaving problem that has the advantage that it is mostly not situated in a critical area of the rug where such repair would generally destroy the patina of the rug, for instance, if it were in the center of the field. (see detail photos) 2.) As is characteristic of Turkish and Caucasian rugs of this age, the dark brown/ black dyes that were used have oxidized the wool; in this rug, many of these oxidized areas have been replaced with brocaded (“sumac”) overweaves (see detail photos) . 3.) The end borders are frayed, and some reweaving would be an improvement. 4.) There is an age and use-worn portion of the field that would best be left as-is other than fixing any small bad repairs (see detail photos). This Ladik prayer rug offers the opportunity to acquire a truly rare antique Turkish prayer rug of this most highly desirable type at a small fraction of the price that a better condition specimen would bring. Without question, this is a particularly beautiful Ladik prayer rug of this early period. To the best of my ability the photos and this description give clear indication of the condition and character of this beautiful Ladik. The photos speak for themselves, so be sure to examine them very carefully and use your own judgment. This is an auction only listing with a reasonable starting price and with no reserve, it is not as an “on-approval” sale . “All sales are final---no returns”. Insurance for the purchase price will be required for shipping. Please see my other listings (refer to photo). This rug is being sold as is pictured and described. It has been part of a collection and has been in storage for many years.
