This old lap desk has an unusual design, has been very well taken care of and is in very good condition, it measures 12" wide, 8 1/2" deep, 4 1/2" high. The design on the top seems to have been carved around the edges with an indented "V" shape, these indented areas have been painted with gold, the inside areas in black which causes it to resemble inlaid, t is also a small picture on the front that may be a decal or possibly painted on, it is quite tiny 1" by 3/4" and it looks like a dutch woman serving food to someone at a table. The box seems to be made of a few different types of wood with purple velvet lining the inner desk portion. T is a removable pen tray with a "secret" compartment under the tray, t is also a hidden area under the entire front portion under the pen and ink box portion. The lock does move somewhat but doesn't "catch" , it may need some adjusting, the key is brass with a golden tassel on it. This is a great antique with a history in Massachusetts. This piece was obtained from a local woman who had been neighbors with former Senator Ronald MacKenzie and is family, this lap desk had belonged to Mrs. MacKenzie and her mother before her, we have an information card regarding Senator Mackenzie that we will include with the lap desk, it came with the box when we purchased it. T are two very old cards, greeting cards read more
