This is a lovely Antique 19th Century Large Hand Carved Wood Trencher Bowl from in Excellent Condition. The trencher is quality crafted of a hardwood, possibly walnut, carved and chipped from a single piece of wood. The bottom is the burl of a tree (see photo) which than takes on a straighter wood grain toward the top. The wood color is a lovely mix of light and dark which has been naturally finished to show that wonderful rich patina that aged wood gets. The bowl has a large oval shape and being hand carved and as a characteristic result of age shrinkage, has an irregular shape. Basically, the trencher measures 20" long x 17" wide x 5" high and weighs 8 pounds. The trencher is clean and in excellent condition with only expected chips, nicks, and scratches all of which blend in beautifully and serve as testament to its age and use. T are 3 short age splits on top at one end, 2 of which carry through to the inside for about 2 inches. T is another age split on the opposite end which does not carry through to the inside. All are tight and don't distract or affect use. This is truly a lovely 19th Century Large Hand Carved Wood Trencher, magnificent for large salads in addition to making a spectacular display by itself or as a holder for other antiques and collectibles.
