This is an unusual yet very attractive antique late 19th century wood and composition Aesthetic Movement frame. It dates circa 1880s to 1890s.Overall it measures 12 1/4 inches x 15 1/4 inches (31.1 cm x 38.7 cm). The back opening size measures 11 inches x 14 inches (28 cm x 35.5 cm). The molding width measures 1 inch (2.54 cm).The base of the frame is stained oak wood. A composition mold of fern leaves and flowers was then applied, and painted brown. It has a primitive, rustic or even Folk Art look about it.As you can see in the photos, each corner has light chipping, with one corner more so than the others. I don't know how that happened and it's not a big deal, but I wanted to point it out. There is some other light chipping, but nothing too bad.The frame has its original old bubbled and wavy glass. It has its original wood backing, which has the maker's name printed on it. It says:FROMJ.W. FRIZZELLPICTURES & FRAMESCORNICHES, MIRRORS ETC752W. BALTIMORE ST.It would be great for an old oil painting, drawing, folk art work, sampler, fraktur, silhouette, etc.It weighs just under 2 lbs. 6 oz. (1.07 kg).It has what I always look for in frames, that wonderful read more
