This auction is for a very finely made antique American Indian lidded basket. Very unusual design, with the lid worked into a distinctive raised hatlike handle . From an Estate, with a paper tag apparently pertaining to the few baskets on a shelf, marked "Santa Barbara- Mission Indians". From that description I would guess that this is Chumash, Pomo or one of the mid-coast Mission Indian groups, though if that is incorrect I am certain the knowledgeagle Ebayers will call it to my attention. In some ways it appears similar to Tlingit baskets encountered during a brief Internet search. Basket is very finely weaved, with dark brown-black glossy designs worked into it, which I assume are either Devils Claw or juncus fibers. It stands 7 1/4" inches tall and about 7 1/2" across. It is obviously the work of a very talented maker. The photos really don't do this basket justice- It has a subtle deep age patina which doesn't show in the pictures. T are numerous photos to try to convery the exquisite workmanship. Be aware that I am far from expert on early American Indian artifacts, so please ask any specific questions well before the auction close. A very, very special and beautiful old piece , which probably belongs in a Museum. Offered with a...................Low Reserve.
