Antique 214-year-old copperplate London print, titled A VIEW OF THE HOUSE OF CORRECTION IN COLD BATH FIELDS, Clerkenwell, which is dated 1st September 1798 and was published in the European Magazine. The Cold Bath Prison, as it was also called, was built during the reign of King James I (1603-1625), and was completely rebuilt in 1794 . . . so this print shows the new prison, which was used to house short-term prisoners, including men, women & children. The prison closed in 1885 and the site is now occupied by the Mount Pleasant Post Office sorting office. We found this print with 150 other London prints when sorting through the stock of an antiquarian print shop which has been in storage since a member of our family closed the shop 40 years ago. The London prints were all filed together in one folder with no indication where they came from, although this one was clearly dated & has the European Magazine's page headingPage size 125mmx212mmIN VERY GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION - AND 214 YEARS OLD
