is an antique? Maine whaling harpoon. A couple of eBay members have informed me that this is a reproduction, but judge for yourself from the pictures. My original description and story of how I acquired this item remains below. I bought this at a yard sale from a 90+ year old man who moved to the Poconos from Maine. When I questioned him about the history of this harpoon, he told me that it used to be his fathers, and that he inherited it when his father died in 1961. He said he wasn't sure of the age of the harpoon, but that he remembered it hanging on the wall of his fathers fishing cabin when he was a boy. If his story is true, that would make this harpoon close to 100 years old or more. I have no way to verify his story, and I know nothing about harpoons, so judge for yourself with the pictures I"ve provided. This harpoon bears no evidence of use, so I was skeptical of the old mans story at first until his wife came out of the house and said "You're not going to sell your fathers harpoon are you?" So if this is an original whaling harpoon it probably represents one of the best examples of the last hand thrown harpoons crafted before the introduction of the gun launched style in 1870. A deep layer of patina and aged hemp rope attest to the age and history. A brass (?) swivel dart attaches to the end of the long iron rod and swings to ensure the implement stayed in place while the whale thrashed. An incredible piece of history deserving prominent display! Perfect for any nautical themed decor! A rare and interesting piece sure to please the maritime history collector in your life! Overall length is 72 inches, and the spear is 24 inches long. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have.
