Original antique MAP *Continent AFRICA* dated about 1640 A.D. Publisher MERIAN Matthaeus (Basel 1593-1650 Langenschwalbach). Delicate Map of Africa, antique copper engraving print dated about 1640 A.D. This antique copper engraving is a lifetime impression. This leaf is over 370 years old ! An impressive map of Africa by the Grand Master of the topographical views. Fine coloured map including a decorative title cartouche. Described: Nova descriptio Africae . Ca. max. size: leaf 38.5 x 30.6 cm, image 35.9 x 26.7 cm. Condition: excellent print with margin along the platemark. Handwork paper with the horizontal laid chains and vertical chain lines produced by the scoop sieve. In the margin one small tear professionally closed hardly to be seen. Map with the original middlefold. Few fine wrinkles and some pale stains. In view of the high age in good condition with few traces of ageing. No damages. Please see the photos below the text.
