Antique Marble Topped, Highly Carved, Ebonized Rosewood Console Table made in Shanghai, China , circa 1860. Table is 31" x 76" x 32 1/2" high. The stone top measues 30 1/2" x 72 7/8" x 1 1/4" thick. When I bought it more than 30 years ago, I had it evaluated by an expert in Chinese antiques in Laguna Beach, CA. He provided the age and source information and stated it had been made for the European or American market. He indicated the stone was a rare Tennesee Marble. He estimated the value then at $5000 to $7500. That is before the repairs to top described below. While Tennesee marble was shipped to China in that era, years later, I found out that a similar type stone is quarried in China. I know not which it is, but it is beautiful. When I bought it the stone was cracked across the middle and held together by another piece of unpolished stone, only slightly smaller, beneath it that was plastered and pinned to the upper stone with brass pins in the repair fashion of the Victorian era. Over time the upper stone had enough movement to wear the edges of the break leaving about a 1/4' gap in places along the top edge. The crack was filled with guttapurcha and wax that flaked out with movement of the table. I had it repaired by removing the lower stone, about half the weight, and gluing and screwing three small steel box beam underneath tho hold the pieces in alignment. The top was then sanded with a very fine grit. The dust was separated by colors and then mixed with acrilic reseins to fill the gaps. The colors were matched to the adjacent colors of each piece of the aggregated stone. The whole top was again polished. The result is nearly undetectable as seen in the pictures. The whole table comes apart into about 12 pieces plus the top. It has sliding joints that lock it together with out glue or fasteners. The front legs are solid and quite heavy. The overall weight is underder 400 pounds. The top should be crated for shipment. The cost of shipment will vary by destination. For an estimate of crating and shipping to your location, call, toll free, to Craters & Freighters, Phoenix, AZ, at . Ask for David and he will give you an extimate.
