I was told from the man who had this in is collection of "Stuff" That this was a bell to call meeting to order for the Masons. It looks to be hand made in oak. You pull the lever down in front and release it and the sound comes from the 8 holes on the sides. It does not sound like your typical hand held ringer bell... it is very menacing sounding and the sound vibrates loud and long. one hole's cover cloth is pulled back and I can see black cast iron parts. lever is made of wood. Split on top panel. Measures 10.5"W X 11" d X 7.5" H. Many folks who were looking through the old man's stuff did not know what it was and it was a mystery to me also until my 8 year old pulled the lever and let go... scared everybody in the room! The adults would press the lever down but I guess because it is old we were afraid to let it come back up on it own. What a novelty!
