Up for auction here is a circa late 1890s to maybe as late as 1915 unframed oil painting on what looks like old Devoe style prepared grey primer board. The subject matter of this oil painting appears to be a portrait of an man that looks like it could be a copy of an old Anthony Van Dyke or Rembrandt painting from an earlier age. The painting measures 26 inches high by 20 inches across. There is no signature on the front or back that we can see. The quality of the painting is outstanding but it is a shame that we don't know the artist. It looks very similar to the work of Chicago area Portrait and historical figure painter John Doctoroff but he was pretty prolific in signing his work so it might not be by him, just another artist that had skill. For condition, there are a few very tiny paint chips, a couple on the face and a couple in the black paint background there are several spots where you can see tiny white spots in the background that are not chips but maybe spots of primer showing through but nothing really too detracting. The painting has never been cleaned and is quite dark and has about 100 years or so of build up on the surface. There is some very old tape on the back of the board that helped secure the painting in its old frame at one time but nothing that affects the painting.
