This ring is a show stopper! Point blank! We're moving soon, so are selling a couple pieces that we inherited many moons ago, hiding in wait. And this ring is the creme of the crop. It's so handsome. In such good taste, albeit with just the right amount of flash, or bling, whatever one wants to call it. The diamond may be an "old cut", as is referred to in the appraisal, but I can assure you it's dazzling. Set off so well in this setting, all so well done. I don't know where Mr. Athearn got it, or exactly when, a safe assumption would be between 1900 and the 1920's. That seems to be when he made most of his fine jewelry acquisitions. I've personally never seen a better looking antique mens diamond ring, as far as styling. It's really perfect. Strong, and it's heavy. This is no powder cake ring! Okay, specifics. I'll read off the appraisal, which was done in 1985. The diamond has a closed opening. I think you can see that in one of the photos. The diamond is approximately 1.75 ct, of VS quality, K color. I'm getting a ring size of about 7 1/2 but give me a bit of leeway on that. And a weight of 10.5 grams. It is a substantial ring! It looks like there are two small indentations in the inside, one I think says 14kt, but is hard for me to make out, it's done a little differently than you see these days, not just written on, but actually indented a bit. I think the ring may have been sized once, in some lights I think there is a bit of discoloration on the inside toward the back. It's weird, I see it in some lights, not in others. It does not distract from the beauty or impact of this ring, at all. It IS an antique. So, it's not perfect. Please bear that in mind, this is not a Zales special. It has some minor scratches from wear, whether those can be buffed out, I don't know, but the ring isn't glossy showroom perfect. It has character. It's in very, very good "antique" condition. A very special estate piece, a fine piece of jewelry from a long gone era. Which in itself, makes a different statement. I listed Mr. Athearn's other Art Deco ring, and will be listing his pocket watch and chain. This is our "mini" estate sale. Thanks!
This ring was appraised at $5,500 in 1985, because of the minor scratches and our subpar economy, I'm going to list it for a bit less, although gold is higher now. So, I think this is a very good deal for such an strikingly handsome men's antique 14kt, diamond ring. I have additional picture of the diamond, email me if you're interested.
