Antique Mexican Sterling Silver 925 Yalalag Cross. These were usually made of coin silver. Upon close inspection, I did find a 925 mark. No mark could be found on the chain which is a 28" continuous chain (no clasp or opening). Obtained from the estate of an old Mexico collector. Piece is large, measuring 6" long by 3" wide. Chain is not represented to be original or silver, but probably is both. I read about the Yalalag cross. It was only made east of Oaxaca in the town of San Juan Yalalag. It was of heavy coin silver with crosses or medals hanging from the terminals. T were many variations of the basic design. They vary from two to five or six inches in width and large ones can weigh a quarter of a pound (this one is heavy, but not that heavy!!). My source is a book "Mexican Jewelry" pub. 1963 by Mary L Davis and Greta Pack (also obtained at same estate sale). It shows similar crosses in the collection of Frederick Davis.
