Exotic Middle Eastern Astrolabes
Up for your review and consideration are a pair of rare and exotic astronomical instruments from the Middle East. These ornate and attractive antique brass astrolabes are from a bygone era. The first medium-sized astrolabe measures approximately 8.5”(H) X 6.75”(W) X 5/8”(D), comes with five sturdy tympans (plates), and has many intriguing inscriptions and decorative embellishments. The tympans have a very pleasing reddish-brown hue to them that I haven't seen before which only makes the astrolabe more attractive and both the rete and the outside limb of the instrument have a dark, almost blackish hue to them which also enhance the visual appeal of the item. The horse pin is attached to the astrolabe with an attractive chain. It appears to be of Arabic-Persian origin, perhaps from the Ottoman Empire. The instrument also comes with a sturdy wood stand that allows the astrolabe to be propped up for handsome display. The second smaller astrolabe measures approximately 6”(H) X 4.75”(W) X 1/4”(D), comes with five tympans (plates), and has many intriguing inscriptions and decorative embellishments. The backside of the instrument depicts the twelve signs of the zodiac in an attractive cameo fashion and the inside mater has visually appealing images as well. It also appears to be of Arabic-Persian origin, perhaps from the Ottoman Empire. The instrument also comes with a sturdy wood stand that allows the astrolabe to be propped up like the first one. But don’t just take my word for it, see what the pictures have to say about the instrument as well! Don’t miss out on this limited opportunity to own a truly exotic, eye-catching piece of Middle Eastern history that would make an awesome addition to any serious home décor or collection of astronomical instruments.
