Fancy Antique Dutch Silver Decorated Waste Basket or Nip Cup The pictures show a decorated miniature Dutch silver waste basket on bun feet. Itâe(tm)s about 1-3/8 inches off the shelf and 1-1/4 across the top. At the bottom are 3 hallmarks. Set against a finely hammered surface covered with a pattern of small circles are 4 cameos showing hand engraved helmeted warriors. The weight is 24 grams. In addition to cabinet pieces, fine miniatures like this make wonderful accents in upscale doll houses, perhaps featured on a stand or centred on a table as a bit of doll house statuary or fine art. At scale, the waste basket would fit, perhaps next to a desk in a doll office, or somew in bath or kitchen. It has also been suggested that it might make a good nip cup. This was in fact an original market for these miniatures, that and for the amusement of wealthy ladies. These miniatures were very expensive in their day. They took high paid very skilled silversmiths a lot of time and effort to make. The items reproduced in miniature were taken from the current social environment, be it a platter, a kettle or a tall ship. The ones that are marked are less common than those that are, but because they were so small they were seldom hallmarked at all, and below a certain weight they were exempt from assay.
