Highly collectible antique lacquer box from the year 1937, created by the artist A. Butorin ( Palekh school of miniature painting) to commemorate 100 year anniversary since the death of the greatest Russian poet A. Pushkin.The scene of a duel is depicted on the cover of the box as a reminder of the tragic event that took place in 1837, when A. Pushkin was senselessly killed in a duel with G.d'Anthes. It might also be a famous scene from A. Pushkin's poem " Eugene Onegin". There is also another secret story behind the scene.The 1st owner of the box worked in the American Ambassy in Moscow at the end of the 30 ies and got this box as a gift from the hands of Russian dignitaries at the special anniversary ceremony devoted to A.Pushkin. All other representatives from different countries also got lacquer boxes with miniature A.Pushkin Fairy Tales paintings on them. But only one box given to American representative showed the scene of a DUEL. Probably it was a hint on the "Iron Curtain" situation and a real life Duel between two countries, capitalist and socialist systems. As we know from the history lesson that in the 1930ies the relationship between USA and Russia were antagonistic and as in Duel one had to die. May be it was a sign full of meaning from Stalin to american people ( he liked to play with meanings). But history was the read more
