General Lazare Hoche [1768-1797]
by Raymond Gayrard [1807-1855] 1821 Bronze 41mmA fine contemporary strike with plain edge From the Galerie Metallique Des Grands Hommes Francais, which was a large series of medals produced over many years by leading medalists of the day. They were struck mainly between 1816 and 1826 although there are some issued after 1826 and as late as 1838. All the medals were produced with a portrait of the celebrated person with simple biographical information on the reverse. The date of issue being dated simply in Arabic numerals. These medals were very much restruck at later dates and are obvious by their edge markings denoting metal and period markings. The series is extensive and difficult to complete least of all because it is hard to find a reference listing all the medals. La Medaille Francaise Au XIX Siecle et l'Histoire by Jean-Pierre Collignon details 119 medals allocated to the series. Louis Lazare Hoche [June 24, 1768 - September 19, 1797] was a French soldier who rose to be general of the Revolutionary army. Born of poor parents near Versailles, he enlisted at sixteen as a private soldier in the Gardes Françaises. In addition to this medal, he was honored with a statue in his home town of Versailles; another statue, the last major work by Jules Dalou, is in Quiberon, Brittany. A complete biography can be seen on wkipedia. Paul Joseph Raymond Gayrard [3 September 1807 - 1855] was French sculptor and engraver of medals born in Clermont-Ferrand, France. He studied at an early age under his sculptor/engraver father Raymond Gayrard and was a student of Francois Rude as well as David d'Angers. Gayrard first exhibited his works at the Salon in 1827 and continued to submit works throughout his lifetime winning a Second class medal in 1834 and a First Class Medal in 1846. His last recorded exhibit was in 1855. He was very successful among the more wealthy of French high society and executed many busts of the more notables of the day but he had a considerable talent for animal modeling. His known bronze animal models date from the years 1846 until 1848 with his powerful plaster of a 'Harness Horse' exhibited at the Salon in 1847 and submitted again in 1848 in bronze. One of his other animals groups titled 'The Monkey Steeplechase' is a rather humorous and whimsical subject done in a similar vain to Christophe Fratin's bronzes of humanized animals. His monumental works include the four evangelists for the Sainte Clotide Basilica in Paris.
