Offered for auction is this vintage solid oak (not veneered) side stand or taboret. It could have been intended for use as a tea table. We believe it has it's original finish with possible clear over coats applied through the years, nothing has been applied in recent years other than wax polish. The finish has darkened and has crazing and wear in the surface from age and use. The table top surface is lighter in color and smother than the sides and lower shelf possibly due to years of polishing the top and wear from use, we see no evidence of it being refinished. The oval top has hand hold cut-outs as shown and also t are surface scratches, some dents and some ring stains which we did not try to remove. The top is made with three quarter sawn boards glued together with simple edge butt joints, no spline is present in the joint. One butt joint needs re-gluing as shown. The top appears to be dowel pegged to the table base. T are two wonderful carved cut-outs on the table base ends as shown. The carvings depict a floral arrangement or stylized tree, see the picture. The cut-out circle measures aabout 5 3/8" in diameter. The sides are also quarter sawn oak. We noticed two wire finish nails have been added to each side of the stand and hammered into the bottom shelf through the sides (one nail is bent over) as shown. The stand is loose and needs re-gluing. It wabbles from side to side a maximum of about 3/4". The bottom shelf has arched support aprons which are dowel pegged into the ends of the stand. One of the four legs has a 1 1/2" long splinter chip on the bottom edge of the leg as shown. The feet bottoms are not beveled. The top of the stand measures 18 1/4" long X 14" wide. The stand measures 20" tall. The two sides are 9 5/8" wide and the bottom shelf is 10 3/8" long X 9 3/8" deep. The top of the bottom shelf is 6" off the floor. This is a charming stand that probably dates (based on it's style and construction) from the turn of the century-the Stickley era of the early 1900's. We found no maker's mark or label or manufacturer date on the piece. We are offering this unique stand with a low starting bid and NO Reserve! Buyer pays USPS Parcel Post shipping and required insurance. Payment is due within 10 days of invoice. U.S. shipping only. We don't charge for handling and packaging. Good Luck!!! |
