This is a large and heavy engineer or shop built model steam engine. It stands almost a foot tall
and weighs 10 pounds. The flywheel is iron and measures 4 inches in diameter. The rest of the engine and boiler are heavy brass. The flat sides have a very dark patina, and that appears to be iron or steel. Everything turns freely and with a little tinkering this should make an very nice working display. This would use small camping sterno cook cans or alcohol for a heat source. An impressive size and interesting old engine. There is an odd lead screw/plug on the side. I am not sure if this was a fusible plug. I think it is, but I am not sure. I never saw a lead plug on a toy, but then I am not sure this is a toy. See last photo. The workmanship is very nice with just about everything scratch built. Even the nuts appear made from square stock. It looks very old. There is significant corrosion on the feet and steel nuts that hold the brass bands. Brass will not rust; so the only way to judge the age is examination of the few iron parts. There are traces of very old red paint on the flywheel. The brass has been cleaned in the recent past. I see scratch/abrasion marks on those surfaces. It could use a good cleaning, polish and some resolder to make a fine display. TLC, I think you would call it. It is possible this was made as a working engine, but for that purpose it is small. As a model it is quite large and heavy. Ten Pounds! Heavy. It has a whistle, safety blow off valve and small throttle (open/close) valve. The whistle appears to have been re-soldered (off angle). It will need some attention. The blow off valve is fully functional, but there is a loose piece that you should re solder. See last 2 photos. The site glass is missing. It will need a new sight glass. You will also need to cut a new gasket for the filler cap. See last two photos. Parts maybe found at It is very old and dirty. This is how I got it and how you will get it. What is lacks in perfection it more than makes up for in age and character. This is a great display piece just as it is. I kept this in my living room. It is a very nice size for display. No delicate little tin toy here, not even close I will carefully pack and ship priority insured USPS.
