This unsigned 19th century Moser perfume bottle is pictured in the books on Moser Glass. The bottle is of red glass cased with clear glass, the red making a teardrop shape within the bottle, where the perfume would be held. It is decorated with gold enamel, adorned with minute leaves and berries overall. Although the bottle has a flattened bottom and will stand, it was primarily worn as a chatelaine or on the finger of the owner. Moser glass is the legacy of Ludwig Moser (1833-1916). Ludwig Moser & Sons was founded in Karlsbad, Austria, in 1857. These perfume bottle are treasured for their intricate colors and fine gold and enamel decoration. In its first few decades, no glass was blown or manufactured at Moser. The focus was entir ely on engraving, enameling, and polishing blanks provided by Loetz and other Bohemian Glassworks. But by the end of the century, Moser had built its own factory and was supplying the highest quality cut and decorated glass to Franz Josef I, the Emperor of Austria. A commission for Edward VII of England followed in 1908 and for the rest of the 20th century, Moser would produce glass for monarchs, maharajahs, and popes. This finger chatelaine bottle dates circa 1880. This bottle is fitted with engraved brass mounts. The top is hinged, and flips back to reveal the original clear glass stopper. The chatelaine or finger ring extends from a tiny brass chain. On the top, engraving and stamping work is done in a star flower pattern. The interior of the of the top still displays the original high gilt finish. The bottle with the brass top measures 3 1/4 inches long by 1 1/4 inches at its widest point. Overall, including the chain and ring, the perfume measures 4 3/8 inches long. It is approximately 1/2 inch thick at the stopper.
