's a golden locket about 1.6" in diameter in average to good condition. first i think a ring is missing off the top clasp (based on similar lockets i have seen on ebay). the locket stays shut but not tightly (even shut t is a gap). the back has about 3 pin point dents (metal pushed in). 2 are more visible that the others. the front has 1 pin point dent and a few that are VERY, VERY faint. now i am mentioning it for accuracy. they are not that bad at all and i don't think, it is too detrimental to the look of the item. i have polished the locket (obviously after taking the pictures). it came out great. i will post new and better pictures very soon. i feel it could look even better, as the case has a texture and its hard to get the tarnish out of the grooves. the inside, under the photos has a silver tone. each side is engraved with the # 31. it is very gauchely done. i thought the original owner may have done it and it could be the date 1831. based on the outfit of the lady and gentleman, it's possible. as for the photos i am going to describe them as well as i can. i believe they are daguerreotype but if i am wrong DO NOT hesitate to correct me. the photos seem to be made of glass with a mirror like effect. they are set in golden ring, that i didn't polish (very tarnished dirty). the lady has a black fabric like material back cover, maintained in place by a waxy residue. the gentleman has a greyish paper like back cover again set in with a waxy material. i would say the photos are only in a fair shape. it is easier to see them in the pictures than in reality. in real you have to flip the photos in a certain angle of a light because the mirror like effect is in the way. they both have rosy/redish accents on their faces. the photos have whitish spots (dirt?) and some kind of brownish ring forming all around the edges. but the glass is not broken and if the pictures are from the 1800s, it's incredible they survived that long and surely they can't be perfect. the couple looks very young. i am not sure if this is a mourning locket but i have seen similar ones on ebay listed as such. the front could be monogrammed with small initials (almost a half inch space). the texture looks like spirals/circles. again i do believe it is a very nice old locket, if unsure about condition please email your questions before bidding. it is sold as is. i can ship the item first class mail with insurance for $4.95. it will have to be boxed. please wait for invoice as insurance is based on the final value fee.
