Antique baseball. Marked “Spalding No. 1” “Official National League.” This ball belonged to Jacob Charles “Jake” Morse (1860-1937). Jake Morse was an influential sportswriter in Boston. He helped to shape the public's perception of baseball during the game's accelerated growth stage from the 1880s to the beginning of World War I. Morse wrote sports articles for the Boston Herald and contributed articles to Sporting Life . He also served as secretary of the New England League, a minor league circuit. One of Morse's most notable accomplishments was the founding in 1908 of Baseball Magazine , the first monthly periodical devoted to baseball. The ball has 5 miniature photos of baseball pioneers. I was able to identify three of the photos. Gilbert Mills - Baseball pioneer Abraham Gilbert Mills is remembered--if at all-today--for heading the "Mills Commission" which concluded that the game of baseball was invented in America by Civil War General Abner Doubleday. William Ambrose Hulbert (1832-1882) – Hulbert was one of the founders of the National League, recognized as Baseball’s first major league, and was also the president of the Chicago White Stockings franchise. John Tener - During a 30-year span, 1888 to 1918, this Horatio Alger figure was a major league pitcher, successful businessman, United States Congressman, Governor of Pennsylvania, and President of the National League. In the latter office, Tener fought off the threat posed by the Federal League and continued the efforts of his predecessors to eliminate rowdyism from NL ballparks. The seller is a descendant of Jacob Charles Morse. For more information about these sports figures, refer to the "Baseball Biography Project." Check out my other items ! According to a collector: This ball is almost certainly a 1926 Official National League Jubilee Dinner Baseball. These very special balls were given to dignitaries & attendees of the National League's Golden Jubilee dinner. This dinner was held February 2nd, 1926 at the Hotel Astor in New York City. I believe there were originally 9 photos on the ball, one for each of the previous presidents of the National League, starting with Morgan Bulkeley in 1876 through John Heydler in 1926. News reports of the day estimate attendance at this dinner to have been approximately1000 people (NY Times 2/3/1926).
