ANTIQUE Native American History, New York - RARE BOOK From an impeccable Americana collector's library. This rare book contains information on Native American tribes of New York state and artifacts of those tribes. The book is Ex Libris and belonged to William Guthman, considered the foremost collector of Americana in the 20th century. His bookplate is on the inside cover. In addition, an original sales slip showing when the book was acquired is also included. Printed in 1850, as a report to the regents of the University of New York and published as The State Cabinet of Natural History. It was divided into ten sections containing information on flora, fauna, geology and Native Indian artifacts and ancient burial sites (Sections D, E and F). Sections related to Native Americans contain black and white illustrations, maps and 17 handsomely hand colored illustrations. These sections document the acquisition of artifacts by the State Cabinet during 1849 to 1850. Among the illustrations are examples of tools, basketry, clothing, bead work, drums, saddle, snow shoes, and war clubs. Items were acquired from New York state tribes and mention Iroquois, Seneca and mound builders. Section F contains five black and white maps. These drawings were made by Dr. Franklin B.
