This item is an antique Native American Navajo wool rug. The rug measures 3'1" by 4'5". The background of the rug is ivory. The rug has a beautifully simple design featuring three large diamond medallions. The center medallion is composed of charcoal, gold and a brilliant ganado red. It is highlighted by a spiked deep brown border. The outside medallions are filled with gold. They have a red highlight and the repeated natural wool color brown border. The color and the details are very sharp throughout the design. The rug has an outside border of a band of tan and a band of brown. The rug is finished with a natural yarn border. It does lie perfectly flat. T is some natural curving and unevenness in the borders.T is a great and interesting example of asymetry in one of the corners(see Photo 2) bottom right w the weaver chose not to weave exactly the same width in the inner border.
The first photograph shows the front of the rug. As evident from the photograph, the colors consistent to the front of the rug are quite vivid. The second photograph shows the reverse side of the rug, which has seen some fading. T are no stains, but a very minor smudges which are totally on the surface of the wool. T is a very old tag (photograph three) sewn into the reverse side of the rug in the lower left corner. I believe it says 'Tennis', and it measures one inch long. The fourth photograph demonstrates the fine weave and craftsmanship of the rug. The rug was purchased by me in the 1970s from an estate sale in Columbia City, Indiana. The rug has been securely stored by me since its purchase. It does not have any moth damage or holes and it has never been washed. The corners of the rug are a bit ragged (see photo 3, for example). I believe the rug dates from 1900-1920, albeit I am no expert on Navajo rugs.. This being said, it is in fine condition for its age. This rug is a wonderful collector's piece with a beautiful balance and use of colors. It could be dramatically displayed as a wall hanging or as an accent rug. It is a beautiful piece for the collector of early Native American Navajo rugs.
