This item is an antique Native American Navajo wool rug. It measures 41" by 55". The incorporates many different colors to compose its very detailed design. The center of the rug holds three purple diamonds with contrasting designs of ivory, scarlet and charcoal. Surrounding the diamonds is a lightning border which runs outward from the center in shades of crimson, yellow, gold, ivory and black. The design is contained within a crimson rectangle. The exterior border of the rug is composed of gold, ivory and black. The rug is finished with crimson thread. The four corners each have a crimson tassel. The colors of the rug are still very vibrant and pleasing.
The rug has one significant flaw. The patchwork that has been done to this rug is less than professional work. On the reverse side of the rug is a patch that has a 7" diameter. The patch has a navy color (please see photographs two and three). On the front of the rug the damaged area has been crotched with black thread. This area has approximately a 7" diameter (please see photographs one and four).. The rug does not have any moth damage. It has never been laundered and it lays perfectly flat. I am no expert on Navajo rugs, but I believe this rug dates from around the mid 1930's.
I purchased this rug in 1977 in this condition. It was purchased at an estate sale in Decatur, Indiana. Since then, the rug has been very securely stored. The use of color in this rug is tremendous. If one can see beyond its weak spots, it is really a very pretty piece.It should be displayed with the non-patched area showing. As such, it is a fine accent rug or throw for a sofa or bed. Or even as a quite striking wall hanging.
